How it is calculated
Apparent power S = √3 × line-to-line voltage × line current. Active power P = S × power factor.
Worked example
At 400 V, 10 A and power factor 0.8, apparent power is about 6,928.20 VA and active power about 5,542.56 W.
Before you calculate
Use line-to-line voltage, not line-to-neutral voltage. The current should be the line current and the power factor must represent the load being assessed. The calculation assumes a balanced three-phase system.
Interpreting the result
This formula does not design a supply, size conductors or select protection. Imbalance, harmonics, starting demand and equipment limits need separate assessment. Apparent power and active power are different quantities and should not be interchanged.
