How it is calculated
DPI = pixels / (printed centimetres / 2.54). Calculate each axis separately.
Worked example
An image measuring 3,000 × 2,400 pixels printed at 25.4 × 20.32 cm has 300 DPI in both directions.
Before you calculate
Use the final printed dimensions, not a resolution number stored in the image metadata. Pixel count and physical size determine effective resolution. Check both axes when the image and print proportions differ.
Interpreting the result
DPI is a useful reference, not a universal print-quality guarantee. Viewing distance, paper, image sharpness and the printing process also matter. Different aspect ratios require cropping or stretching; this tool does not choose a crop.
Use the units shown beside each field. Monetary fields labelled EUR stay in euros; changing language does not exchange currencies. Results are estimates under the stated assumptions.
